Focus on absolute returns

Most traditional funds focus on the main index (benchmark). Nevertheless, approximately 80% do not achieve their goal on a regular basis: outperforming the market. If the main index delivers a negative return, even the remaining 20% are not able to deliver positive returns. Managed futures funds focus on absolute returns and are able to achieve positive performance across all market conditions. In the graph above the Barclays Managed Futures index is plotted against the global MSCI World index for the period 1980 to 2010.

Returns across all market conditions

Trend following strategies have the potential to deliver strong performance across all market conditions. By taking short positions they are able to profit even from declining markets. Most traditional investment funds are unable to do this. The effect is visible in the graph above where the Barclays Managed Futures index is plotted against the global MSCI index for the crisis year 2008.
